Molotov cocktails in protest, Berlin lashes out at Berisha: Distance yourself,
Scenes from the DP protest

The German Embassy in Tirana emphasizes that political protests and the right to demonstrate are fundamental rights in any democratic society, while adding that they can never justify violence against persons or objects.

Berlin has lashed out at the Democratic Party leader, Sali Berisha, hours after a protest held on Sunday afternoon in Tirana, where dozens of Molotov cocktails were thrown by demonstrators, while police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

For the first time in an opposition protest led by Sali Berisha, protesters carried German flags, replacing the American ones that had been present in previous protests. This was interpreted with the support that the opposition has received during the meetings that its deputies held in Berlin in recent days, but not only.

This was also a sign that official Berlin had conditioned Albania's journey to the EU on concrete achievements, more specifically the rule of law and the non-use of political immunity to protect itself from justice.

But despite the support or messages given to the DP deputies in Berlin during their two or three-day visit to the Bundestag, it seems that Germany does not support violent acts at all.

In its response, the German Embassy in Tirana emphasizes that political protests and the right to demonstrate are fundamental rights in any democratic society, while adding that they can never justify violence against persons or objects.

" The German Embassy condemns the unacceptable violence in the context of yesterday's demonstrations. Political protests and the right to demonstrate are fundamental rights in any democratic society. But they can never justify violence against persons or objects. We demand from the representatives of the responsible political parties to unequivocally distance themselves from violence ," the official response states.

And this reaction is completely the same as the call that was previously made by the EPP, the largest grouping in the European Parliament, which officially and privately, has asked Berisha's Democrats to give up violent acts during the protests. When it was thought that these messages would be taken into account by the Democrats and a change of strategy was expected, in yesterday's protest, there was an increase in Molotov cocktails compared to previous protests, and the only change was that the US flags were replaced by those of Germany. /Pamphlet/
