An open debate on maintaining peace and security in Ukraine is being held today in the Security Council. This session is chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama as Albania holds the Presidency of the Security Council.
The debate between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the representative of the Russian delegation at the High Level Open Debate at the UN Headquarters in New York follows.
The Russian ambassador continued to oppose Rama, asking him not to take political positions. While Rama replied that if he doesn't want to answer in "the quality of the Albanian prime minister, then don't provoke him as such".
Excerpts from the debate:
Vasily Nebenzya: Mr. President, I must draw your attention to the fact that today you are acting as the chairman of the Council, not in the national capacity as a representative of Albania. Your objective is to conduct a meeting rather than to deliver political assessments.
Rama: I just answered you because you addressed me as the Albanian Prime Minister and continued to say incorrect things regarding what has been processed here. If you don't want me to answer you as Prime Minister of Albania, don't provoke me as such. However, let's continue again.
Russian delegation: Mr. Chairman, I am addressing you only as the chairman of the security council, at no time did I address you as the prime minister of Albania, we are engaged in a procedural dialogue with you, not in a substantive dialogue, please refrain from political statements in opening statements to the council.
Rama: It was you who spoke about NATO, about the fact that Albania is in NATO. This has nothing to do with my role as chairman of the Council. However, can we now, with your permission, continue the session normally? Thank you very much.
