DP MP, Klevis Balliu, today accused the State Police of using brutal violence against citizens during the January 24 protest, including the use of expired tear gas and forcible escorts, including of children.
He requested public clarifications from the Director of Police, Ilir Proda, regarding the use of force, the storage of chemical weapons, and the role of police structures in protecting individuals associated with organized crime.
Balliu emphasized that this disproportionate reaction towards citizens shows state capture and the government's lack of legitimacy, underlining that the opposition will continue the battle for the rule of law and the punishment of abusers.
" In my capacity as Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs, I request that the Director of the State Police, Ilir Proda, present full and public clarifications regarding:
•the use of expired tear gas against citizens;
•the reasons why chemical substances that have expired for several years are still in the premises of the State Police and are used in police operations;
•the role of the State Police in serving individuals associated with organized crime;
•the procedures followed for authorizing and controlling the use of force during the protest ," said Balliu.

"In the protest on January 24, numerous citizens gathered peacefully to express their opposition to corruption and organized crime, which for years have undermined the foundations of the state and citizens' trust in institutions.
This civic protest was faced with an unjustified and disproportionate violent reaction from state structures, reflecting the degradation of a captured power, which instead of protecting citizens, serves criminal interests.
Under the political responsibility of the narco-Prime Minister Edi Rama and under the direct leadership of the Director of the State Police, Ilir Proda, unacceptable violence was exercised against protesters, including children, who were forcibly escorted to the police stations. These actions constitute serious violations of human rights, the Constitution and the democratic standards that the Republic of Albania is obliged to respect.
During this protest, a citizen was brutally beaten by law enforcement officers, suffering serious physical injuries, including a laceration to the head, a fact documented on video footage. This act constitutes an excessive and unlawful use of force, which requires immediate administrative and criminal liability.
It has also been found that expired tear gas was used, fired indiscriminately and out of proportion, not only against protesters, but also against citizens who were in their homes, including mothers with children and pregnant women. This action poses a serious risk to public health and raises serious concerns about the management and control of chemical weapons by the State Police.
It is a public fact that this government, under the leadership of narco-Prime Minister Edi Rama, has served not to guarantee public order and security, but as a shield and escort for individuals linked to organized crime, including Ergys Agas, widely considered to be the coordinator of criminal structures. This constitutes a serious distortion of the constitutional mission of the State Police and of the Albanian state itself.
In the same context of state capture, institutionalized corruption, represented by key government figures such as Belinda Balluku, has produced massive abuses of public funds, clientelistic projects, and illicit enrichment, while citizens face poverty, insecurity, and a lack of basic services.
Just a few days ago, the parliamentary majority, represented by Mr. Niko Peleshi and the narco-Prime Minister Edi Rama, took punitive measures against opposition MPs, claiming that the lives of MPs were endangered due to lighting a smoke bomb in the Assembly hall. In stark contrast, the massive use of tear gas against citizens, including children and entire families, has not been accompanied by any measure of accountability against the perpetrators.
Also, detailed explanations are required for cases of arrest and violence against children, including the serious case of escorting a 10-year-old child.
It should also be explained why, in serious criminal events that occur in high national security facilities, such as the airport, there is a lack of effective response from police structures, while in response to citizen protests against corruption and crime, the police presence is massive and repressive.
Violence against citizens, women and children is unacceptable in a democratic state. The degradation of power to the point of serving organized crime and the use of brutal force against citizens is a clear indication of the loss of political and moral legitimacy of this government.
The opposition will continue its battle without letup to restore constitutional order, the rule of law, the safety of life and economic security of citizens, as well as to bring to justice every official, including ministers and senior leaders, who have abused power and violated the public interest.
Any public funds stolen or misused by drug lords will be returned to citizens through confiscation and legal punishment of those responsible, with the Democratic Party coming to power.
