The debate on the "Gateway to the Alps" project has been accompanied by strong political tensions in the Parliament, where the Secretary General of the Democratic Party, Flamur Noka, harshly attacked the Rama government for the way in which, according to him, the North of the country has been abandoned and left in isolation over recent years.
From the Parliament podium, Noka accused the majority of causing the depopulation of the northern areas through misgovernance, lack of investment, and blocking economic development.
" Okay, go ahead, look at the North. In the Dukagjin area. Go, look at Malësia e Madhe, in Tropoja, in Has, in Kukës, in Dibër. All the villages have been depopulated by your misgovernment. There is a terrible and painful devastation, a terrible devastation. Painful. Was that your scenario? Yes, to depopulate, to depopulate, so that you can then seize everything there. That was your scenario ," Noka declared.
He accused the government that while promoting tourism projects and talking about elite development, in reality it has isolated the North through a lack of infrastructure and the imposition of tolls on main roads.
" And then you talk about elite tourism. Yes, you have the North completely isolated. You have two beams, you have placed two beams on the North. And whoever dares to go to the North must... you have placed a blockade. You, no one else. And you are planning other beams to place on the North. You who are talking about the North here ," he said.
In his speech, Flamur Noka also touched on the state of the road infrastructure in the north, mentioning the National Road and the Milot-Rrëshen segment, which he said continues to remain problematic even after 14 years of socialist governance.
" Why didn't you, the Alps and the North, remember to fix the roads? Look at the National Road. Since you talk about the North. When we came into opposition, the Milot-Rrëshen segment remained unfinished. You have been in power for 14 years, you haven't done it. Why? You hate the North! This one hates the North! This one, Ayatollah Surreli! ", declared Noka, referring to Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Noka's statements come at a time when the government is promoting the "Gateway to the Alps" project as a strategic initiative for the development of mountain tourism in the north of the country. The opposition, however, claims that real investments are lacking and that the northern areas continue to face mass emigration, dilapidated roads and a lack of basic services.
