The National Assembly of the Democratic Party has approved changes to the party's statute, bringing several innovations to the internal organization and the process of selecting candidates for elections.
One of the main changes is the creation of a special commission that will be tasked with evaluating and filtering candidacies for MPs and mayors. Candidates who do not receive the approval of this commission will not be able to participate in the primary process.
The new statute also provides for an increased role for the diaspora in the leadership structures of the Democratic Party. According to the approved changes, Albanians living abroad will have up to 15 percent representation in the National Assembly, the National Council and on candidate lists.
The changes also aim to strengthen the role of women and girls in the party, improve grassroots organization, and increase cooperation between DP branches and local elected officials.
However, the Democrats have decided not to touch one of the most controversial provisions of the statute, known as the “Basha article.” This rule remains in force and stipulates that the party leader must resign in the event of a defeat in parliamentary or local elections.
Presenting the changes, Gazment Bardhi emphasized that the new statute maintains the principle that decision-making in the Democratic Party belongs to the members and not to the leadership structures.
"Power in the DP belongs to its members and not to the structures. This principle must be preserved, making the DP the only force where the member is not peripheral and his will determines many things," said Bardhi.
According to him, the changes also foresee increasing the representation of the diaspora to up to 15 percent in the party's governing bodies and candidate lists, as well as increasing the role of women and girls in the structures of the Democratic Party.
"The diaspora will have dedicated representation of up to 15% in all governing bodies, including the Assembly and the National Council. The role of women and girls in the DP has also been strengthened and the basic organization of the party has been improved," said Bardhi.
"Overall, the working group assessed that the working statute guarantees democratic functioning, respects the party's standards with those of its European sisters, that power in the DP belongs to its members and not to structures. This principle must be preserved, making the DP the only force where the member is not peripheral and his will determines much."
It has been proposed that the diaspora have dedicated representation of up to 15% in all governing bodies, including the Assembly, the Assembly Council and 15% in candidate lists. The role of women and girls in the DP has been strengthened. The first political force to increase the quota of women's representation. The basic organization of the party has been improved. The relationship between party branches and local elected officials has been strengthened", said Bardhi, among other things, in his speech.
