Primaries in the DP, 2 out of 72 branch heads resign; what's happening in

A day earlier, an instruction was sent to the leaders of the DP branches, which expires on Sunday, requiring that anyone who will enter the primary race for parliamentary candidates must resign from their positions as Chairman.

The instruction has created clashes within the ranks of the Democrats, while deputies of this party have opposed this proposal. One of the legislators who has opposed is Bujar Leskaj, the political leader of Vlora, who in a post on the network emphasizes that the Heads of the branches are the only ones who are elected with the principle of 1 member 1 vote, therefore, their resignation is meaningless. Leskaj emphasizes that everyone should enter the primaries, including the heads of the regions. Also, in his reaction, Leskaj opposes the instruction for the branch heads to resign from their functions.

But two of the branch leaders in the Vlora Region, where Bujar Leskaj was appointed as leader, have resigned. They are the head of the Himara branch, Afrovita Dhimojani, and the head of the Saranda branch, Manjola Nikollo. It is not known whether the move by the two branch leaders of the Democratic Party is a counter-argument to the position previously expressed by Leskaj, or a meticulous implementation of the instructions that were distributed to him the day before by the central offices.

"On May 11, we vote for the necessary change that the country needs, but we also vote for Himara to have its representative in the Albanian Parliament!

As the leader of the Himara Branch for three years, I have been facing power, with the only weapon being the word, the defense of Himara, the vote, and faith in God.

I could not have done this without the support of Democratic Party members, allies, and citizens.

The Democratic Party will select its candidates through the Primary Process, with the principle of “one member, one vote.” This has been the commitment of the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha, sanctioned by statute.

A commitment that opens up competition and meritocracy, a commitment that gave me and many disappointed Democrats confidence to become part of the competitions within the structures.

"According to the instructions of the Democratic Party, I would like to inform you that I have made the decision to run in the Primary, resigning as the Head of the Himara Branch," writes Dhimojani.

Meanwhile, Manjola Nikollo, head of the Saranda PD branch, re-elected only 8 months ago to this position, writes "based on the instructions of the DPA leadership, the function of the Branch Chairman conflicts with the Primary Election process and for this reason must be withdrawn, I humbly ask you to accept the decision to resign from the position."

"As one of you, passing step by step through every function from a simple member of the section to the leadership level, I consider my ambition to run in the Primary process for the Democratic Party's list of candidates for deputies for the May 11, 2025 elections legitimate, which I cannot achieve without your support!

I have never called being a leader a privilege, but an act of sacrifice for the common good, especially these 12 difficult years of opposition that we have all experienced together. Alongside you, I have worked as an equal among equals, as a democrat among democrats, but above all as a citizen who sees politics as a means to serve and not to profit. I have always fought to achieve and not to remain silent in the face of injustice, because I have always believed that endurance and courage are the right means for us to succeed.

"Candidacy for MP has never been a goal in itself. My goal has always been to contribute to the Democratic Party regardless of position. But I think that in these moments the conditions are ripe for my representation, ours together, to move to this new stage. I do not prefer and have never preferred appointments, so I will run again, as I have always done, starting from the section, the leadership, and up to the direction of the branch," she emphasizes.
