Neither his appearance alongside Berisha, nor his position in the cabinet, nor his functions, nor the severity of his statements against political opponents, have helped him cross the necessary threshold.
DP members voted on March 1 on a list of names that expressed ambitions for parliamentary candidates in the May 11 elections. The primary process produced surprise results, with many virtually unknown names challenging Democratic officials, even those dressed in parliamentary garb.
The results produced surprises, despite the fact that the membership vote will have a weight of no more than 30% in the final decision-making that belongs to Sali Berisha and the members of the DP Presidency, who will decide on the final list. What is known so far is that beyond the names that participated in the primaries, there will be no others who may emerge at the last minute as candidates, but on the other hand, no one will prevent the Presidency and Berisha from including someone who has not passed the threshold according to the District, in the official list of candidates for deputies.
So who surprised in the March 1 primaries?
The name, perhaps the most unknown to the general public, is that of Hysen Kadiu, who ranks first on the list of 82 names in Tirana, challenging many of those considered to be well-known figures. Kadiu entered the primary by resigning as Head of the DP branch in Kavaja and has left behind those considered to be political 'heavyweights' in the largest opposition party on the list. Another surprise name is that of Zija Ismaili, who received 1091 votes in the Berat District, while earlier he also ran for former mayor of Berat. Meanwhile, Eduart Sharka in the Fier District ranks first, leaving behind two MPs Sajmir Korreshi and Luan Baçi. Sharka has received 795 votes.
Meanwhile, the surprise at the national level from the DP primaries belongs to MP Bledjon Nallbati. He results in the most votes from the membership with 1219 votes collected in the Korça Region. Nallbati belongs to Gazment Bardhi's group in the DP, but it seems that the fact that he was the mayor of Devoll and the leader of the DP branch for several years, before taking the mandate of the legislator, helped him in the primaries.
On the other hand, Jorida Tabaku has surprised by being the most voted candidate in the primary list in terms of the female gender. Despite her moderate stances that are not supported at all by Berisha's militants, it seems that Tabaku has managed to break many of the names on the Tirana list, thus being the most voted candidate among the female gender and the 5th with the most votes from the DP Parliamentary Group.
And while those who surprised for the better can be counted on the fingers of one hand, it seems that those who have disappointed with the results of the primaries are numerous. This list even includes associates of the Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha and MPs. It seems that neither their appearance alongside Berisha, nor their position in the cabinet, nor their functions, nor the severity of their statements against political opponents, have helped them cross the necessary threshold. However, some of them still have a hope of being on the final list, as long as the decision is made by the DP Presidency and Sali Berisha.
Floriana Garo, who always appears alongside Berisha, ran in Durrës, but disappointed. She received 32 votes. Silvi Bardhi, another Berisha associate in the DP Press Office, ran in Elbasan and received 42 votes. Adriana Kalaja, one of Berisha's supporters and known for her extreme statements, especially towards the US Embassy, also disappointed when she only managed to receive 153 votes from the Tirana votes. Among the MPs who disappointed are Orjela Nebiaj 47 votes (Tirana), Kreshnik Çollaku 68 votes (Dibar), Sorina Koti 42 votes (Korca). MP Zheni Gjergji also disappointed in Elbasan where she received 168 votes and can enter the official list of May 11 either based on respecting gender quotas, or with a decision of the Presidency. Ledina Mandija, one of the Secretaries in the DP, who held the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the 2017 technical government, has disappointed in Shkodra by receiving 29 votes. It is not known whether the members of the DP in Shkodra do not know Mandija, are angry that she was positioned as Rama's Deputy Prime Minister, at the proposal of the DP, or whether the clans in Shkodra have opposed her.
And similarly, the results of the primaries disappointed Dorian Teliti, who received 117 votes in Tirana, urban planner Gentian Kaprata with 11 votes, Edith Harxhi, who in 2021 ran for president of the Democratic Party against Lulzim Basha, received 146 votes, actress Adriana Tolka, who has been a protagonist in the protests for the Theater, those in front of the City Hall or on "Shpresës" street, received 22 votes, or former MP, businessman Jak Ndokaj, who only counted 13 votes.
