Prime Minister Edi Rama, during his closing speech at the Socialist Parliamentary Group meeting to open the new parliamentary year, announced the cessation of funding for Radio Television Albania. Calling RTSH a major failure, Rama went further by demanding the total closure of Television Albania for an indefinite period, until a total reform is achieved.
Rama even floated the idea that RTSH should not receive total funding from the state, but that its funding should function in the same way as private media. According to the Prime Minister, all options are on the table for RTSH, from closure to public partnership and privatization.
" I am convinced that political representation must be guaranteed in parliamentary committees; civil servants are there to support, but not to discuss with the committees. A minister is needed, and in cases of impossibility, a deputy goes. We must be "on call", because in this process we need coordination and interaction in conditions where the political and media environment is polluted. It is about "pots". We must use every space to have our say.
The mission cannot end in sessions or committees. The historical truth is that we have tried to create the conditions for public television to be reformed, but we have failed. So far, its balance sheet is a “successful failure”, that is, from debt to debt, to neglect. We do not have a public television in Albania; the last time I saw it was in 1990, before the overthrow of the system. I went as an invitee, but I did not even see myself, these are the only interviews and I did not receive any messages. I told them: close it.
"The television has their budget, while others do not have it guaranteed. Public television has a budget, but it is in debt; they want the right to broadcast the Albanian Football Association, but they do not pay the money. Because we are the public and we go to the government. We do not have to give them a single penny until the Albanians' taxes are paid. Every option should be open: closure, partnership, privatization, but I do not participate in any attempt ," said Rama.
