SP meeting ends, Rama warns of isolation of opposition: No more hostage-taking
Edi Rama

After the group's long meeting, the Prime Minister delivered a concluding speech, denouncing the opposition's behavior in Parliament and announcing measures to guarantee the normal functioning of the Assembly.

Prime Minister Edi Rama delivered a speech after the closing of the marathon meeting of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, where support for priority reforms and the functioning of the Assembly were discussed. In his concluding speech, Rama focused on the behavior of the opposition and its influence on parliamentary processes.

Rama said that the hours for opposition MPs are much longer than in the Parliaments of European Union countries and that this does not happen in any other democratic parliament. With this statement, Rama did not stop at salaries, but at the way in which the opposition is interrupting the normal procedures of the sessions and is taking hours by force, without respecting parliamentary ethics. The Prime Minister emphasized that this taking the Parliament and the public hostage for 1 or 2 hours is unacceptable and must end.

He underlined that the Parliament's rules of procedure are not written in stone, but must be implemented seriously and that the practices of EU Parliaments clearly show that insulting the dignity of parliamentarians, physical interference or procedures that impede the functioning of the legislative body are not tolerated. " The word 'procedure' cannot be equated with taking the Parliament hostage ," said Rama, underlining that the measures must be immediate and that "the legalization of hooliganism in the Parliament hall is unacceptable."

The Prime Minister underlined that the Socialist Party will continue the pace of reforms and will not allow such behavior to lead to isolation of the functioning of the country's highest legislative institution. He mentioned that respect for parliamentary regulations and implementation of democratic practices are needed, considering the behavior of the opposition as an attempt to hinder democratic processes and establish their own norms in parliament.

Edi Rama: The hours for opposition MPs are much more than the opposition receives in the EU Parliament. By this I do not mean that we should reduce the salaries of the opposition. I mean that we should see how the hours taken by force, the hours taken by abuse in complete violation of parliamentary ethics, will be stopped. To take hostage not the Assembly, but the public. For 1 or 2 hours when the Assembly session begins, or to occupy the hall, placing the majority MPs in the position of spectators of a clay theater. This must end. This does not happen in any EU parliament. Since the Parliament's rules of procedure are not written in stone. Based on EU practices, immediate intervention must be made so that the word "procedure" is not equivalent to the concept of "hostage" and speaking of hostage-taking. In no democratic parliament is physical intervention, but an attack on the dignity of those present, not tolerated. It is not freedom of speech. At this point, measures should be immediate, as the regulation states.
