Why is the DP no longer talking about the analysis of May 11?

The result of May 11 gave Edi Rama a formidable parliamentary majority, which, beyond any machinations, showed that the opposition is failing to gain traction in the electorate or revive the trust of Albanians...

More than 5 months have passed since the May 11 elections, where the opposition recorded one of the weakest electoral results in 34 years of pluralism, the voices that in the first days after the process insisted on an analysis of what had happened have almost died down.

Today, no one in the DP is talking about analysis, while it seems that they are waiting for a move from the Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, who continues to firmly hold the thesis that on May 11 there were no elections, but an electoral farce. This position is also supported by the final report of the OSCE/ODIHR, which highlights a series of problems related to the elections, but insists that the parties sit down and reform the Electoral Code.

In fact, the problem with the elections in Albania in terms of meeting standards is not related to the Code, but to the political will of the actors and factors participating in the process to respect the rules of a level playing field, which was lacking on May 11, and this is also evidenced in the report of international observers.

The elections of May 11, 2025 were a decisive moment for the Albanian opposition. After the strong clashes that began at the end of 2021 due to the expulsion of Sali Berisha from the Parliamentary Group by Lulzim Basha, the then leader of the Democratic Party, the Democrats under Berisha's leadership entered an electoral race with the promise of "reformation and unification."

But it seems that the scheme failed, even if it did not prevent manipulation, as claimed. The result of May 11 gave Edi Rama a formidable parliamentary majority, which, beyond any machinations, showed that the opposition is not managing to gain traction in the electorate, or to revive the trust of Albanians.

After the announcement of the results, there was a flurry of reactions demanding analysis, accountability, even pointing the finger of responsibility at Sali Berisha regarding the way he built the lists of candidates for MPs, or how he reached an agreement in the Assembly with Edi Rama's socialists on changes to the Electoral Code.

On the other hand, there were promises from Berisha and many other figures in the leadership of the DP that there would be an in-depth analysis, which was expected to begin in September, but as October draws to a close, the democratic leader has not 'dared' to even call a meeting of the National Council.

The official narrative of the DP after the elections focused on “electoral irregularities”, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of a scheme to manipulate the elections that started from pressures and vote buying, to engaging in crime in support of the SP and its candidates. While some time ago they accused Lulzim Basha of thinking more about his seat than about the analysis of the loss in 2021, after the loss in 2025 another strategy was chosen: no Extraordinary Assembly was held, but positions in the Parliamentary Group, Parliamentary Commissions were hastily divided, while the “status quo” was maintained in the party structure.

If a full analysis were conducted after May 11, responsibility would be exposed with specific names regarding the organization of the campaign or contribution to the campaign, but also the wrong strategy that was followed.

This could penalize 10 out of 12 district leaders, where the Democrats not only lost, but also suffered strong electoral blows, including Tirana, Fier, and Elbasan.

Therefore, postponing an analysis for May 11 does not simply seem like a routine decision, but a political stance that clearly shows that beyond any problems in the elections, the DP is not ready to change.

And this is not about whether to change the president, who, as he stated, will run again in the spring of 2026, but about renewing many of the leadership positions.  /Pamphlet/
