The opposition protest was opened by a speech by Democratic Party MP and Young Democrats leader, Besart Xhaferri, who said that they are in the square today for free and fair elections.
Xhaferri raised strong allegations of corruption and mismanagement of public funds, specifically mentioning construction procedures and building safety.
In his speech, Xhaferri described the government as influenced by corruption and oligarchy, accusing that public revenues do not go to essential services such as education, health, and infrastructure, but are instead benefited by a limited group of interests.
Xhaferri called on young people not to leave Albania, as our country is not poor, but stolen.
"Today we have gathered in this square, not simply to protest against a government, but to prove that the Albanian spirit cannot be bought, defeated, or surrendered to a regime that is stealing our present and killing our future. Just yesterday, in the Albanian parliament, we raised our voices about a bitter truth that is endangering the lives of our citizens every day. We spoke about the dangerous facades, about the polystyrene that is turning Tirana's palaces into time mines, endangering people's lives due to greed and corruption with building permits. But isn't Edi Rama's entire government fixed like those polystyrene facades? A state painted with bright propaganda paints, beautiful to look at from the outside, but deeply rotten, corrupt, and extremely dangerous from the inside.
A single spark of truth is enough, a little unbridled justice is enough, for all this facade of power to be burned and brought to the ground. Honorable friends, they have turned Albania into a personal fiefdom. Your tax money, the sweat of our parents, does not go to better schools, does not go to hospitals where you can find healing, nor to roads nor to public safety. They go straight to the pockets of a handful of oligarchs and power holders, through secret tenders and phantom concessions. And what are they offering our youth today? What are they offering my peers? Only two paths, submission or emigration. The depopulation of Albania is not an accident of history, it is not even a global phenomenon as they want to sell you. It is a well-thought-out project of this ruling sect, to empty the country of rebellious youth, of honest professionals, of free minds who refuse to bow their heads and turn into obedient patrons.
But I, as the president of the Youth Forum and together with all of you here, tell you today, we will not leave. This is our country, this is our land. Albania is not poor, Albania is stolen. We cannot leave our homeland to those who treat it as market loot. The youth of this country was not born to become a free labor force on the streets of Europe. We have the intelligence, the strength, the education and the courage to make Albania a prosperous country, worthy of our families. But to do this we must tear down the wall of impunity. We must raise a moral and civic uprising, a rebellion against the evil that has taken our breath away. We are here to demand free and fair elections. We are here to tell those who hide behind the doors of those buildings of power that this power belongs to the sovereign, to the people and not to gangs. Do not be afraid of their propaganda machinery. They only seem strong when we are divided, only when we are silent. But look at this square today, look at the strength of unity. This river of people is their greatest terror.
Let this be April 17, the day when we say enough to the rotten facade. The day when we say enough to the theft of hope. The day when we prove that the Democratic Party and the Albanian opposition are the only real alternative to return this country to the tracks of Europe. Stand up, unite, do not give up! Because tomorrow belongs to those who dare, to those who do not remain silent, to those who love Albania. God bless you, God bless the Albanian youth, God bless Albania! Victory! ”, said Xhaferri.
