Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared that Albania will not extend the one-year ban on the TikTok platform, after what he described as constructive cooperation with the social network's leaders.
In an interview with POLITICO, Rama said that the government is "satisfied with the outcome" of the talks and that a concrete plan for cooperation with the platform will soon be presented to citizens.
According to Rama, TikTok's reaction after the initial ban decision was surprisingly positive.
He said he had expected confrontation or aggressive retaliation, but instead, the company's leaders showed a willingness to listen to the Albanian government's concerns and address the issues raised.
Albania banned TikTok in March 2025, after about a year of negotiations over online abuse, including two suicides suspected of being linked to harassment on the platform. The event that precipitated the decision was the stabbing death of 14-year-old Martin Cani, near the Fan Noli school in Tirana, after a conflict that reportedly started online.
However, the ban was opposed by the opposition and civil society organizations, who accused the government of censorship and restriction of expression. Rama acknowledged that the ban did not solve the violence in schools, but emphasized that it served to establish security mechanisms that were previously missing.
