While the main goal is for full membership in the European Union to occur within 2030, Prime Minister Edi Rama has come up with a new thesis today.
According to him, Albania is ready to accept membership in the Union even by giving up its veto right on decision-making that will be made in Brussels.
Speaking at a panel organized in London on the topic "Western Balkans and the European Union", Rama said that EU countries today are within their rights when they think that any of the members can veto whenever given the opportunity.
" There is a very clear desperation among EU member states, especially the big ones in terms of equality around the 27-member table that has to reach consensus on everything. I can imagine that when they see us, they will say 'Oh my God, we have more of those who can bring trouble' and in the end they will say 'no, no' and then in the end the decision has a veto. They have the right not to veto but to the fact that they are so frustrated. For a long time I have said that our admission as a member with a different status is welcome, without veto rights, without voting rights as long as the EU will reform itself. We would completely agree", declared Rama.
"As far as we are concerned, when it comes to compatibility with EU foreign policy, we have given ourselves the right to what we think, but when it comes time to decide we are there in line and follow it. We do the same thing in NATO, because in fact we are small and it is not up to us to make decisions and that is a good thing. When a big mess happens, or a big failure, no one can blame us, while when there is success we are part of it.
I have been an advocate of two things: the first is that the process cannot be all or nothing, meaning that until you become a member, and as long as you are only a candidate, you have nothing. What I mean by this is that the member states around us receive a contribution of 4,500 euros per capita from the EU, while for us the contribution for us is 160-170 euros per capita. This is impossible. We have advocated for this and from this encouragement that we made, we managed to get people to listen to us to have this new growth plan and additional money to finance reforms. This is not at all comparable to the rest, but it is something different ”, the prime minister said in London.
