Prime Minister Edi Rama has requested the dismissal of Erion Veliaj from the position of mayor of Tirana, leaving the decision to the Municipal Council.
Journalist Endri Xhafo says that the case will end up in the Constitutional Court, as there are doubts about the legality of this action.
"The municipal council can approve Veliaj's dismissal. The decision will go to the Constitutional Court, if the Constitutional Court decides that he should remain mayor, 60 days could pass from today until the elections, so they could go to early elections," said journalist Xhafo.
"Edi Rama left the dismissal of Veliaj to the municipal council. Erion Veliaj is not going to go to the office in the Municipality of Tirana. How are you going to dismiss Veliaj? He will leave it to the municipal council.
But, the precedent of Berisha not appearing in parliament for 6 months, not because he didn't want to, and Lindita Nikolla said that we consulted with lawyers and they didn't take away Berisha's mandate, also applies to Veliaj because he is not appearing because he doesn't want to.
The Municipal Council can approve the dismissal of Veliaj. The decision will go to the Constitutional Court, if the Constitutional Court decides that he should remain mayor because the way he was removed has no basis. But if 60 days can pass from today until the elections, Tirana can go to early elections, so it will be something quick that either the Constitutional Court will drag it out and elections will be held and a fait accompli will be faced, because lawyers say that there is no way to dismiss Erion Veliaj. "- said Xhafo.
