Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to use the card of Russian influence to threaten the EU over Albania's membership. Although he tries to show that Tirana is not seduced by Moscow, Rama sends a message to Brussels that Putin is spreading his tentacles in the region and the union should look from the Balkans.
The statements came from Prague, where the prime minister is participating in the GLOBSEC security forum.
" We are Europeans and we will be with the EU until the end, as we were until the end with Stalin, we will be with the EU even when the EU disappears and another EU is built. We are loyal. No other actor like Russia could change our minds. It is not the same in the region. Russia has a lot of influence in the region and before it's too late, we need to do some things differently, starting with the growth plan which is a new story, for non-member countries to start integrating in other ways in the whole organism of Europe. It can happen even faster because the biggest problem is to convince the public opinion that we are accepting Albanians and why this is not easy. It is important to create the conditions for members of the Western Balkans to be more integrated in Europe without being members ," said Rama.
In the panel discussion with the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, moderated by the well-known journalist Ali Aslan, he was asked why it is important for Albania to be a steadfast supporter of Ukraine. Before answering the question, Rama said that he had changed a lot since he sat next to the two Nordics because he needed the sun in a cold place like Prague.
" We went to a place where Washington and Prague were the same, we couldn't come. They told us that American imperialism was the same devil and we should stick with Stalin. There is no interest, no need to see Russia as our tool as long as the Russian, the dream of a certain variant of imperialism will not disappear. We are the only country in Europe that, since 1990, there has been no visit, either by the high authorities in Moscow, or the high authorities of Moscow to us.
