Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted for the first time to international media about the protests against the tourist project in Zvërnec. In an interview with CNN International, the head of government rejected claims that the project is related to the creation of a “private island for the Trump family,” while accusing opponents of the investment of spreading fake news and conducting a disinformation campaign against Albania.
Asked by a CNN journalist about the protests that have taken place in Tirana and in coastal areas against Jared Kushner's investment, Rama said that reality is being distorted and that there are no protests throughout the country, as claimed.
" First of all, I thank you for giving me this opportunity, because I must say that it is truly impressive to feel the weight of fake news coming even from media that, in my eyes, are very respected. And just to clarify, you said protests all over Albania. That is false. There are no protests all over Albania. There is a protest in the capital ," Rama said.
The Prime Minister went further, linking the debate created around the project to what he described as an organized attack against Albania and its tourism development.
" We are in a hybrid war. Albania is under attack from enemies that we know very well. It is under attack from very strong competition in our part of the Mediterranean. It is under attack from thousands and hundreds of thousands of fake profiles (bots) that have been created to cause this whole storm. And of course, in this protest there are people with good intentions, young people who are generally interested in the environment, but who are largely misinformed ," he declared.
In his response to CNN, Rama also denied one of the main accusations that has been articulated by opponents of the project, that of creating a private island in favor of the Trump family or taking control of protected areas.
" There is no such thing as a 'Trump family island.' There is no such thing as the American president's family taking control of protected areas with flamingos ," the prime minister said.
