Prime Minister Edi Rama has been forced to correct the latest gaffe by his Foreign Minister, Ferit Hoxha. In an interview with the European media outlet "EurActiv", the minister made it clear that the agreement will not be renewed after the end of the five-year term, linking this to the claim that Albania will be part of the European Union by 2030.
However, after the political and media storm caused by Hoxha's statement, Rama's reaction came, emphasizing that the agreement with Italy remains in force and there is no change in the Albanian government's position, until the moment the Italian side seeks to extend the agreement.
Rama's reaction to X: To all journalists from Italy and beyond, who are contacting regarding an incorrect quote reported by a media outlet after an interview with the Albanian Foreign Minister: let me reiterate clearly, and I hope definitively, that our protocol with Italy will continue to be in force, as long as Italy wants it.
This is the second scandal of the Foreign Minister, after the one with the message to the Albanians of North Macedonia. Ferit Hoxha has made it a habit that after 'catching' a blunder, he comes out and denies it.
He clarified that his statement had been misinterpreted and did not constitute a change in Albania's official position.
The statement resonated, as it was interpreted as a signal that official Tirana is withdrawing from the agreement with Giogia Meloni, whom Edi Rama has described as his "little sister."
