The Prime Minister disagrees with the reactions following the statements about the closure of RTSH...
A new public debate has erupted between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the international network "SafeJournalists", following the latter's statements accusing the head of government of a tendency to politicize the Albanian Public Television, RTSH.
In an official response distributed on January 18, the SafeJournalists network expressed “serious concern” about Rama’s statements on the future and financing of RTSH, warning that “tying RTSH’s existence to political approval undermines its independence and violates media freedom.” They called on the Albanian government to base any reform of public media on “transparent and legal processes,” especially in the context of Albania’s EU integration, where media freedom and institutional independence are key criteria.
But as is his custom, the Prime Minister's response was not long in coming, as he could not swallow the criticism.
Through a reaction on the X network (formerly Twitter), Rama rejected SafeJournalists' claims, describing them as "deep misinterpretations" and expressions of an "intellectual laziness towards listening."
" It is becoming an ugly habit of this era of intellectual laziness for people not to listen to what is said, but to attach ready-made labels. My words were not intended at all to link the funding or existence of RTSH with any political endorsement. Any such interpretation is incorrect and manipulative ," Rama writes.
He invited the authors of the statement to "read or listen carefully to my speech and make a sincere effort to understand the gist," adding that "protecting information begins with not spreading misinformation."
SafeJournalists : From a freedom of expression perspective, linking the existence or funding of a public broadcaster to executive evaluations of “merit” raises serious concerns. Such an approach risks undermining the principle of arm’s-length governance, which is essential to European standards on media freedom. Even in the absence of immediate legal or budgetary measures, public statements of this nature can exert indirect pressure on editorial independence, contribute to institutional uncertainty and encourage self-censorship within editorial offices.
The SafeJournalists Network is particularly concerned by the normalisation of “closure” as a publicly articulated option for a public service broadcaster. In European democratic practice, the central question is not whether public service media should exist, but how their governance, accountability and independence can be strengthened in line with democratic standards. Treating the continued existence of a public service broadcaster as contingent on political convenience risks weakening the institutional safeguards that protect journalistic freedom.
Edi Rama: It is becoming a sad model of this era of rampant intellectual laziness, not to listen to what is actually being said, but to be confronted with statements like the one I have seen, which reflects a deep and distorted misunderstanding of my position on the Albanian public broadcaster (RTSH).
I invite the authors of this misleading statement to read or listen carefully to my speech and make a sincere effort to understand the essence of what was said. My statements have absolutely nothing to do with 'tying the funding or existence of RTSH to political approval'. Any such interpretation is simply wrong and misleading. /Pamphlet
