Prime Minister Edi Rama has given a message to the socialist members of the Tirana Municipal Council, telling them that they should gather and dismiss Mayor Erion Veliaj.
Rama said that Veliaj has been denied the right to a fair trial and that no replacement can have the legitimacy needed to lead him.
"We come to the emergencies of Tirana. After 7 months, there is no president, no elected president in office, no president convicted by justice, we have a president elected by the people, who has been denied the right to a free trial, he has been given a long trial, the reflections of the media bazaar, and an open violation of the law and every custom of that jewel from inside that stall and conversations with family members from the prison phone. This does not happen in any country, in any democratic country, dictatorial no no, the violation has been more open, more brutal, in total abuse of office, by those three who should keep the investigative materials under control, but this is another topic.
"No one knows how long this story can last, while no unelected deputy of the people, of the mayor, can have the democratic legitimacy and internal strength to lead the municipality of the country's capital for 2 years. Tirana has great, countless tasks, day and night. I do not take away any merit from the incumbent mayor for what he has done in these 7 months. I thank him. But today we must make a political decision to pave the way for elections for a new mayor in Tirana. Our representatives in the municipal council must put into operation the mechanism for dismissing the elected mayor. It is not a proposal that I make lightly, therefore I understand all those who may not feel good about such a decision," said Rama.
