Rama secured a big victory, Le Monde: Meloni congratulated him without waiting

Diaspora votes have not yet been counted, but according to initial results, Rama is leading with them as well.

International media continue to cover developments from Albania, where parliamentary elections were held on May 11, with Edi Rama securing a bigger victory than that of 4 years ago.

Le Monde writes in an article that the Socialist Party of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama scored a major victory in the parliamentary elections, securing him a fourth term.

The Socialist Party won 52.1% of the vote on Sunday compared to 34.2% for an alliance of opposition parties led by its main rival Sali Berisha, according to results published by the Central Election Commission (CEC).

"The diaspora votes have not yet been counted, but according to initial results, Rama is leading with them as well. According to forecasts, the Socialist Party could have more lawmakers than in the 2021 elections. At that time, it won 74 seats in the 140-seat assembly," writes Le Monde.

The campaign was dominated by a race between Prime Minister Rama, 60, who focused his campaign on European integration, and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party. Both campaigned mainly on economic issues, such as pensions, wages, infrastructure and tourism.

But there were also sharp clashes with accusations over the fight against corruption and organized crime, which are seen as essential requirements for Albania's bid for the EU.

On Tuesday, the 80-year-old Berisha - Albania's first post-communist president - made allegations of election irregularities, accusing the Socialists of pressure, fraud and vote-buying. "It is impossible to agree to such elections. No, forget about it," he told reporters in Tirana. Berisha called for a protest on Friday, when European leaders were due to meet in Tirana for the sixth summit of the European Political Community.

The elections were closely watched by the European Union and seen as a test of the democratic maturity of the Balkan country, until now the most Europe-oriented in the region, after decades of dictatorship.

Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama, is doing his best to accelerate his country's membership in the EU.

"The elections were generally managed in an inclusive and transparent manner, election day was calm and well-organized, despite some shortcomings," said EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos in a joint statement.

Without waiting for the official results, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated her friend Edi Rama on his "reconfirmation as Prime Minister of Albania".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his British counterpart Keir Starmer also congratulated Rama on his election victory. In Sunday's vote, about 40 parties were trying to attract the votes of a total of 3.7 million voters. /Adapted from Pamphlet by Le Monde/
