The Corridor VIII Ministerial is taking place in Tirana today, attended by the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani.
In his speech, he described the project as a decision with political weight and part of the Italian strategy for bringing the Western Balkans closer to the European Union.
Tajani stressed that Rome considers Corridor VIII not only as an infrastructure investment, but also as an instrument to strengthen ties between the region and Europe. He confirmed Italy's commitment to supporting the Western Balkan countries in the integration process.
"For Italians, Corridor VIII is not just a technical and infrastructural choice, it is a political choice, because this part of our strategy for the reunification of the Balkans with European history is strategic for the Italian government. We will do our utmost to help you be part of the EU and I am very clear about Western Balkans and Ukraine. But first we must complete the reunification. I say reunification, not enlargement, you are Europeans, this is a reunification. Today I confirm our commitment to strengthen the connection and cooperation in the region", said Tajani.
He placed emphasis on the term “reunification”, clarifying that in his view the accession process does not constitute an enlargement of the EU, but rather the return of the countries of the region to the European family. In conclusion, he reaffirmed Italy’s readiness to strengthen political and economic cooperation in the Balkans.
