Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku said that the World Bank report highlighted the fact that the poverty rate is still high in Albania.
Tabaku also states that Albanian citizens, who live on less than 5.5 US dollars per day according to purchasing power, constitute a significant percentage of the population, adding that this is a fact that should not be ignored and that it requires intervention.
"The Albanian economy today is unbalanced, it produces added value and fails to distribute it to the citizens; fails to invest in the future; fails to increase the income of Albanian families; it fails to be the economy of the majority.
The World Bank report has highlighted the sad fact that the poverty rate is still high in Albania. 30% of Albanians below 5.5 dollars/day is not just a number, but reflects the reality of many families facing poverty.
The poverty rate is twice the rate of other Western Balkan countries and much higher than the European Union average. This fact shows that we must take essential measures to transform this situation. Not only the numbers, but also the individual stories behind them, are essential to understanding the challenges facing our citizens.
Albanians, who live on less than US$5.50 per day according to purchasing power, make up a significant percentage of the population. This fact cannot be ignored and requires us to have a stronger and more determined intervention to improve this situation.
This is not just a government challenge, but an issue that we as a community must address together. At this point, there is no room for separate policies. We are all part of this process and can contribute to changing the situation.
The way to restore trust is to change this system, which has clearly failed. The return to the market economy, competition, social mobility and the fight against corruption. The battle today is to maintain the middle class as this is the way to alleviate poverty and ensure a society functions properly. The only way to have an economic growth that at the end of the day increases the well-being and income of every Albanian. For this reason, the established economic model must be changed; the model that today only increases construction; which fails to produce economic growth in agriculture and tourism.
The model that does not produce quality and therefore today more than ever we must think about education at the center of every policy; for a quality workforce; for policies for the middle class and for the family which should be the priority! Restoring trust in institutions; the market economy, competition and the fight against corruption can change a lot today in the per capita income of our families. The balances of a minority economy can change to the economy of the majority of Albanian families!" , writes Tabaku on Facebook.
