On May 23, the DP membership was called to vote in a referendum on whether or not to confirm Sali Berisha as the leader of the largest opposition force. A process that began as a competition and ended with only one name on the ballot, could not produce any surprises, except that Sali Berisha would be reconfirmed as leader with 99% of the votes.
The entire process was structured in such a way that anyone who would run for the leadership of the Democratic Party and who could raise problems, not for Berisha's seat, but for the transparency of the race, was not allowed to run. This happened with Ervin Salianji, Alesia Balliu or Evi Kokalari, the Albanian-American activist, who has now chosen to wage a battle with Berisha and his family, at the doors of SPAK.
Even in what was considered the May 23 race, Mereme Sala, a doctor who is active in the DP structures but has not held leadership positions, was not allowed to run, which officially penalized her from challenging Berisha. Then two or three other names were disqualified, who try to run for the presidency of the DP whenever there is talk of elections or re-elections.

In conditions where he had no rivals facing him and the entire process was organized by his 'loyalists' in the DP, who also administered and counted the votes, the only comparison that can be made in the case of Sali Berisha is with his own results.
From December 2021 to May 2026, the DP has organized 2 referendums for the mayor, both with the same strategy, with almost the same format for the ballot and without rivals. If we refer to the figures and compare them, it turns out that despite the fact that in 2026 more members declared themselves eligible to vote and the situation is completely different from that of 2021, a time when the strongest clashes with Lulzim Basha were recorded, Berisha failed to either bring out more voters in the referendum or receive more votes than on December 18, 5 years ago.
In the referendum of May 23, 2026, 38,902 members were declared to have voted , while on December 18, 2021, 43,680 members voted. This indicates that the DP has around 5,000 members, while the official figure for its membership was 50,000 people.
Another figure that shows the decline of Berisha in 2026 from that of 2021 is the votes that supported him in the referendum. In 2026, Berisha received the support of 37,341 members, while in December 2021, 40,820 members supported him. This shows that even for preferential votes, Berisha in 2026 has suffered a loss of about 3,500 votes.
If we refer to the political situations and the statements that the DP is in the last mile to overthrow Edi Rama as Prime Minister, at least the Berisha of 2026 should have instilled more confidence in the membership of the party he controls and leads than the one of 2021, when he returned to receive the seal and office in the DP, which he had 'delegated' to Lulzim Basha.
