At the joint media conference, the President of the Council of Europe and Edi Rama declared that at the Berlin Process Summit that will be held tomorrow, there will not be a position on the issue of Kosovo and Serbia.
Von der Leyen added that these two states should sit at the dialogue table mediated by the EU.
While Rama said that typically this process is not the place to resolve bilateral issues.
Excerpts from the conference:
After the recent situation in Kosovo, what do you expect to happen with the Ohrid agreement?
Ursula Von der Leyen: The Ohrid Agreement is what was reached in February and March, the basis for reconciliation through EU dialogue. It is important that Kosovo and Serbia return to the table for the normalization of the relationship. This is the right way for the future because Kosovo and Serbia will be part of the EU.
Do you expect new developments between Kosovo and Serbia, because after September 24, this will be the first table where the two prime ministers of these two countries will be present?
Edi Rama: The Berlin process is related to the continuous promotion of all the countries of the region towards the 4 freedoms of the EU, the movement of people, goods, capital and services. Typically this process is not the place to resolve bilateral issues. But in the program of the Summit, the work lunch of the leaders will also be devoted to neighborly relations in the region. The space for discussion among the attendees is programmed, but it is not a Summit that undertakes to find solutions to problems, which are problems that are trained and solved under the umbrella of the EU.
From Tirana, Ursula von der Leyen was asked if there will be a statement at the Berlin Summit in Tirana that will condemn what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Von der Leyen said that the European Council will meet on Tuesday and condemn the terrorist attack by Hamas and that Israel has the right to defend itself.
" From what I understand, a statement was not foreseen at the Berlin summit, we will have a summit of the European Council the day after that we will also have a statement. It has been made public, it strongly condemns the terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel and that Israel has the right to be protected in accordance with international law. Humanitarian aid must be provided to civilians in Gaza and the victims of Hamas. That is why we have tripled our aid in the Gaza Strip to 75 million euros. This is the framework on Tuesday that was made public . "- said Von der Leyen.
