The British tabloid "Daily Mail" has written another article about the McGonigal affair, where it informs that the FBI has deepened the investigation of their former agent. Triggered by the affair with Albania, the heads of the Bureau have ordered that all of McGonigal's work at the FBI be scanned. So all the files that he has investigated in his 22-year career will be seen.

Concerned FBI chiefs are sifting through 'numerous' high-profile investigations spanning 22 years, fearing they were compromised by the bureau's convicted spy Charles McGonigal.

The investigative operation spans the entire time the former New York counterintelligence chief worked for the agency.

McGonigal, 55, has already been jailed for four years and two months for taking money and conspiring with a sanctioned Russian oligarch who is a friend of despotic President Vladimir Putin.

But the full potential consequences of his treason are outlined in a US government sentencing memorandum for another case in Washington DC, where he will be sentenced on February 16.

Prosecutors are seeking an additional 30 months in prison and a $95,000 fine for hiding $225,000 in cash he received from an Albanian intelligence official.

And they reveal in the January 5 memo – obtained by the Daily Mail – that the FBI is so concerned about McGonigal's deception that "sensitive" cases dating back to when he became a special agent are being scrutinized.

The memo states: " Given the defendant's senior and sensitive role in the organization, the FBI has been forced to undertake substantial reviews of many other investigations to ensure that none were compromised during the defendant's tenure as FBI special agent- and special supervisory agent ".

" The defendant has worked on some of the most sensitive and important cases handled by the FBI ."

The memorandum further warns: ' His lack of credibility, as revealed by his conduct on the basis of his criminal offence, could endanger all' .

McGonigal joined the FBI in 1996 and began his career working on the investigation of the TWA Flight 800 disaster, in which 230 people died when a Boeing 747 exploded and crashed into the Atlantic.

He was assigned to the New York field office during the September 11, 2001 attacks on America and joined a special response team that focused on post-9/11 international terrorist threats.

The rising star advanced to become a supervisory special agent in the counterintelligence section at FBI headquarters in Washington in 2002.

Four years later he became field supervisor of a counter-espionage team in the Washington field office, where he was assigned to help dismantle a network of undercover Russian agents. / Adapted from "Daily Mail"
