Rama does not spare his criticism of the EU: "We were humiliated 3 times behind closed doors, but they made us stronger!"
Today, Albania officially opened negotiations with the EU. At the Albania-EU intergovernmental conference, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the work will continue for our country to be a member of the European family until 2030.
However, this long-awaited news was accompanied by the arrogance of the prime minister, who again found the space to blame the EU for the obstacles encountered in the accession process.
Rama said that the EU has humiliated Albania 3 times behind closed doors, but has not given up.
" It is our goal to complete this process within this decade and be ready to knock on the doors of the Council of Europe as a member state. This is very ambitious and will require a large volume of work, we have worked and drawn up a roadmap. We have a plan, so we rely on our friends and partners to help us achieve this. When I say friends, it's two-way. We need knowledge and brain support.
By doing all this, as far as we are concerned, we will meet all the standards or intermediate milestones. To make Albania a member country in the way it works and this is the most important thing as we do not want Albania to leave and take its bags and come to Brussels, we want the EU to be in Albania. This is exactly what we need to complete, to build Europe in Albania.
When I see that in the process of integration we changed so many things, we entered a new dialogue dynamic. We have many new things which were not the case for other countries when they tried to become members of the EU. Journalists only see the financial part, but it is about integration. 5 years ago it seemed impossible, today it seems real. We were humiliated 3 times.
The commission said we were ready, then behind closed doors, 3 times we were humiliated. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. We have come out of it stronger and that is where we are today. We know that the road ahead is long, old habits don't go away easily, but for us there is no other future. Everything you need to understand "when Albanians fall in love, no one can stop them!" .- declared the prime minister.
Rama also boasted about the so-called "access to justice".
From Luxembourg, he stated that today Albania has an accountable and transparent system, which, according to him, has investigated, judged and punished high-profile officials. Rama said that he plans to fight corruption with this justice.
" It is not a pro-European rhetoric, it is a matter of life and death for our dream to leave to generations a country where freedom is indisputable and where democracy works for everyone. Albania has fulfilled all the prerequisites to start this membership phase and remains steadfast in fulfilling the conditions. Achievements in justice reform, a more accountable system. In our history we are seeing high profile investigations and political figures being accused or convicted before independent courts regardless of party.
We will do this by fighting corruption at every level to guarantee the safety of citizens and to deserve our place in the EU. No matter how much this progress deepens, we will do so while preserving and protecting human rights. We have implemented a fairly progressive framework based on European standards. Our will will be supplemented by bylaws. We will build on the excellent work with a great team of negotiators and we will strengthen this administration in the service of the future" , said Rama.
Among other things, he said that we will build Europe in Albania.
" I am confident that as far as we are concerned we will meet all the benchmarks or milestones. And it will haunt me for the rest of the decade.
We want to make Albania a member country of the EU, how it works and how things are done. This is important because we don't want Albania to leave, take its bags and come to Brussels, we want the EU to come to Albania.
Our motto: In Albania we have started to build Europe and this is what we want to do. We want to finish. Let's build Europe in Albania ," said the Prime Minister.
On the other hand, in his speech during the conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, said that his country will stand by Albania on the path to membership in the European Union.
The Hungarian diplomat said that the EU integration process of the Western Balkans makes the region more developed, more stable and safer.
" Albania has done very well when it comes to fulfilling the conditions set by the EU, so that it can open the chapters of the negotiations. It is an honor and a privilege that the start of negotiations for Albania begins during the Hungarian presidency of the EU. There are six groups of chapters that need to be further negotiated. The preparation process is really difficult, complex and we know that experience is very important. HungariA will provide training for members of the Albanian administration. We are determined to develop a good, good neighborly policy. The EU integration process of the Western Balkans makes the region more developed, more stable and safer. "Hungary is committed to accompanying Albania towards the EU ," he said.
