Arben Malaj has stated that the Democratic Party is going through a serious political crisis and that the departure of Sali Berisha would pave the way for the party's revival.
In a television broadcast, the former Finance Minister said that the opposition has failed to create a convincing alternative to the government. According to him, this situation is also related to the way the two main parties in the country function.
Malaj said he had hoped that Berisha would choose to leave politics on his own, noting that important international figures such as Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher and Angela Merkel have retired from political life without consequences for their countries.
He added that Berisha's long leadership is hindering the Democratic Party's breathing space and is keeping political developments in the country blocked.
According to Malaj, even within the Democratic Party there is a lack of will to convince Berisha to take an honorary role and vacate the party leadership. He described the DP as a "stuck engine" that is unable to function normally in opposition.
Malaj: I believe that the crisis of the Democratic Party is very deep in Albanian politics, also due to the fact that being part of the opposition, it should face the necessity of improving towards the majority, but given that the two party leaders act like Siamese brothers, which was documented by the 2008 agreement and the agreements on the Electoral and Territorial Reform are also ready, I had hoped that Sali Berisha would find a moment to leave politics. There would be no big mistake. Tony Blair is gone, Thatcher is gone, Merkel is gone, but it seems that he will not leave that party and resembles that man who raises his own child and then puts his hands on his throat and strangles it.
I have also discussed with colleagues from the Democratic Party, but no one can find the strength to convince the Honorary President to leave, to free the party to breathe. It is an engine that has stalled and has stalled, hindering all political developments in the country.
