The prestigious “The Economic Times”, part of “The Times” magazine, has dedicated an article to Jared Kushner and Invanka Trump’s investments in the island of Sazan. They are currently in Albania and foreign media have returned attention to Sazan. According to “The Economic Times”, Rama made the island available to them after Trump’s victory.
US President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, have retired from politics and are now involved in luxury real estate, according to a report by Realtor.com. The couple is investing $1.4 billion to transform an abandoned former Soviet weapons base on an Albanian island into a luxury resort.
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner turn to luxury real estate
Ivanka, 43, and Kushner, 44, have reportedly spent the past year working to turn Sazan Island in Albania, one of the last undeveloped islands in the Mediterranean, into a luxury destination for the rich and privileged.
According to The New York Times, the couple's plans received preliminary approval from the Albanian government in January, just two months after Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election and a few days before his inauguration for a second term.
Following this approval, the Albanian government announced that it would cooperate with the couple to clear the area of unexploded and buried weapons still located at the development site.
A resort with history and elegance
According to the report, the couple plans to incorporate some of the island's dilapidated military buildings and some of the 3,600 abandoned bunkers as part of the resort project. In an interview in 2024, Ivanka said they were working with "the best architects and the best brands" to turn the resort into an "extraordinary" property.
Support from the Albanian government
A representative of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told The New York Times in 2024: “ The fact that such a well-known American entrepreneur is showing interest in investing in Albania makes us very proud and happy ,” as quoted by Realtor.com.
Rama himself has expressed his enthusiasm for the Trump-Kushner project, telling The Guardian that he believes Albania " cannot fail to take advantage of a gift like Sazani " and added: " We need luxury tourism, like a desert that needs water . "
Locals now call it "Trump Island"
Even before the couple received official approval or publicly announced their plans, locals were speculating about the project, and many are already calling the island "Trump Island."
According to 'Realtor', Kushner has not commented recently on the project, but in 2024 he told "The Guardian" that their plans would carefully consider the natural environment of Sazan: " When a development is announced, everyone is scared. Everyone assumes the worst. But when they see our plans, the way we are designing it, the respect for the surrounding environment, I think people will be very, very pleased. Although with developments you can't please everyone , "he said.
There is no deadline yet for the start of construction.
However, it is not yet known when construction of the resort will begin. Documents related to the preliminary approval from the government emphasize that the authorities have the right to withdraw the decision if negotiations do not progress. /Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “The Economic Times”
