From MAGA's split to the Albanian cabinet: Why Rama put two pastors in key ministries
On Friday, something special happened in the history of post-communist Albania: Toni Gogu was appointed Minister of Justice and Ermal Nufi Minister of Defense. Both are part of the evangelical Protestant community (Gogu is known as "Pastor Genti", Nufi preaches at the New Covenant Church in Tirana). Both are self-proclaimed pastors.
Albania has fanatically preserved the secular model since 1912. Minarets and bells have colored the skyline, but for the first time, a new tinge of faith is included in the government cabinet.
This move is not just an administrative change. Its real address is Washington.
What's happening to MAGA? The message coming from Republicans
To understand the depth of this movement, we need to look at what is happening in the United States, where Donald Trump's cabinet is about 90 percent evangelical and where figures like Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth preached at Charlie Kirk's memorial.
But within the evangelical movement there is a fundamental division. On one side are the "hard Zionists" who support Israel unconditionally (Trump, Rubio, Hegseth). On the other side are the "skeptics," who believe that Israel is God's chosen people but that its current government has strayed from God's path.
Tucker Carlson is the leading voice of this skeptical camp. JD Vance seems to be trying to represent this group (when he went to Jerusalem, he went to the church, not the Wailing Wall).
Carlson, Candace Owens and others are creating space for conservatives who are not necessarily Zionists but do not want to leave the party.
The Israeli dilemma and its solution
Israel faces a paradox. Domestically, Christians often face harassment and discrimination. But internationally, Israel desperately needs the support of American evangelicals (without them, the alliance with the US loses its strongest pillar).
The solution? Placing pro-Israel Christians in key diplomatic positions.
Mike Huckabee is the clearest example. The American ambassador is not Jewish, he is an evangelical pastor. When the question is raised, "Why are you treating Christians badly in Israel?", Huckabee comes out and says, "I am a Christian, I am here, and Israel respects me."
There is no more beautiful chess move than the ambassador 'playing the church bass'.
Same logic now with Rama
Now, if we understand this mechanism, it becomes easier for us to read what is happening in Tirana.
After repeated arrests and corruption charges, Rama continues to be prime minister. But something has changed in his strategy.
At a time when MAGA is raising questions about governance and religious beliefs in Albania, Rama places two evangelical believers at the head of Justice and Defense, a move that reads more as a political message than a technical choice.
Justice and Defense are not secondary ports. Justice affects the reform monitored by the US and EU, the relationship with SPAK. Defense is directly related to NATO and the Pentagon.
When someone in Washington asks "What about this Rama, is he in line with us?" , the answer is ready: "We have two pastors in the cabinet, and we even have positive discrimination for Christians."
In politics, sometimes people get elected precisely because they have nothing to do with what they're going to do. They get elected for what they represent.
Toni Gogu and Ermal Nufi are not there to reform justice or command the army. They are there to be seen, to be read, to be understood.
