Ferdinand Xhaferri, DP MP in Durrës District, has announced that he will not be part of the primaries to be held on March 1, which means that he will not run for the Democratic Party in the parliamentary elections on May 11.
Xhaferri opposed the primaries process, emphasizing that 3 months before the elections, the DP does not need primaries, but needs to strengthen structures, meet citizens, and work to win the May 11 elections, after 12 years in opposition.
Xhaferaj explained that in recent months, some of the most important decisions have served the DP leader, Sali Berisha, but not the Democrats, citing as an example the changes to the Electoral Code. Xhaferaj believes that the DP should have fought for the full opening of the list of candidates for deputies.
"The way decisions have been made so far has confirmed that they serve a personal agenda, not an agenda for the Democrats. There was no reason for the DP to agree to an Electoral Code that keeps 30% of the list closed," Ferdinand Xhaferaj said in an interview with Vizion+.
The MP from Durrës also criticized the way in which the leader of the DP, Berisha, appointed political leaders in 12 districts.
"20 political leaders who were appointed without any kind of analysis. I understand that in politics the criterion of loyalty should function, but this should not be decisive. There should also be other criteria, such as contributions, etc. Loyalty to the party leader is a criterion, I have nothing against it, but the problem I have is what other set of criteria should function so that the selection would be better," he added.
According to Xhaferaj, the Democrats should only aim for victory on May 11, emphasizing that statements against SPAK do not serve this purpose.
"How can you declare your personal agenda: 'I will dissolve SPAK'? This does not help. I understand, but Albania needs change and the DP, this value of Albania, needs to be expressed in institutions, because we have 12 years left on the streets. And this is where everything begins and ends," said Xhaferaj.
So far, three MPs from the current parliamentary group have refused to take part in the primaries.
