Democratic Party MP Ina Zhupa has reacted to the Constitutional Court's decision to block access to the TikTok platform. The Democrat stressed that the court found that the measure constituted a restriction on freedom of expression and the press.
In her reaction, Zhupa thanked the Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH) and the BIRN Investigative Network for sending the case to constitutional trial.
"The Constitutional Court's decision found that the interruption of access to the TikTok platform constitutes a restriction of freedom of expression and the press. I thank the Journalists' Association and the BIRN Investigative Network for independently submitting it to a constitutional trial," said Zhupa.
She added that the finding that the government's decision to shut down TikTok has violated freedom of expression constitutes an important step in protecting democracy and fundamental rights.

According to Zhupa, the Constitutional Court's decision confirms the opposition's previous position that closing a social network like TikTok was a serious act against freedom of expression and an electorally motivated action.
The MP also argued that the attempt to limit the platform during the electoral campaign aimed to limit the space for public debate and shut down critical voices.
"Closing a social network like TikTok, just because it could not be controlled by the government, was a serious act against freedom of expression and an action with a pure electoral motive. The electoral campaign seems to have scared them so much that they attempted to censor and restrict a platform where citizens express themselves freely and where propaganda cannot be controlled with 'reports', 'shadowbans' or propaganda applications ," Zhupa declared.
In her reaction, she added that this mechanism was used for electoral interests, aiming to narrow the space for political debate.
"Clearly a proven mechanism today that has been used for electoral interests by silencing critical voices against the government and narrowing the space for political parties ," the MP emphasized.
In conclusion, Zhupa described the Constitutional Court's decision as a strong reminder of the importance of protecting freedom of expression.
"The Constitutional Court's decision is a strong reminder that freedom of expression cannot be violated by political decisions and that the fear of power has reached an alarming level," the MP concluded.
