Majority did not accept at midnight on Thursday a decision of the Constitutional Court to send to it the issue of the mandate of the socialist MP, Olta Xhaçka.

This revolting decision of the opposition has also shaken Brussels.

The EU office in Tirana, a reaction to the media, has stated that 'what happened yesterday is not a step in the right direction.'

According to the EU office, the implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court by the Parliament is an essential issue as it is related to the institutional checks and balances in the country's democratic system.

"We have also expressed our concerns in the last report on the Rule of Law in Albania, regarding the fact that some decisions of the Constitutional Court have not been implemented by the Parliament, including in relation to this issue, where the decision of the Constitutional Court dates back more than a year and a half ago (January 2023).

We were encouraged by the fact that the Speaker of the Parliament, during the opening of the parliamentary session last week, emphasized as a priority the need for the Assembly to follow the remaining decisions of the Constitutional Court.

What happened yesterday is not a step in the right direction.

The implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court by the Parliament is an essential issue as it is related to the institutional checks and balances in the country's democratic system."

Yesterday evening, the majority once again defended their colleague Olta Xhaçka by not approving the motion of 1/10 of the deputies of the Assembly of Albania to send the request for mandate incompatibility to the Constitutional Court.

Only 25 democratic deputies voted in favor, while 9 socialists voted against. Another 65 pressed the abstention button, preventing the draft decision from receiving the necessary votes for approval.

Elisa Spiropali tried to justify the action of the majority by saying that the Parliament followed the entire constitutional procedure and in the face of this situation, she said that she will turn to the Venice Commission to get a legal opinion, an action that the socialists had warned months ago.

According to the vote, the socialists who voted against are Damian Gjiknuri, Bledar Çuçi, Jyrgis Çyrbja, Anduel Tahiraj, Paulin Sterkaj, Petro Koçi, Shkelqim Bullari, Bujar Çela and Klodiana Spahiu.
