Rama's decision to hold elections in Tirana, Alimehmeti: The Prime Minister

Member of the National Council of the Democratic Party of Albania and the Tirana Municipal Council, Ilir Alimehmeti, has commented on the recent developments in the Tirana municipality and the statements of Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the request for the dismissal of Mayor Erion Veliaj.

Alimehmeti reacted to Rama's statement at the SP National Assembly, where the prime minister asked the SP members in the municipal council to initiate procedures for Veliaj's dismissal and pave the way for new elections in the Tirana municipality.

He explained that according to the law, if a mayor does not appear to exercise his duties for a period of 3 months, the Municipal Council can propose his resignation to the Prime Minister. This period, he said, expired on May 10, and on May 12 the Municipal Council was supposed to meet to consider the resignation proposal. According to him, this is a legal requirement that has been ignored, as the Municipal Council has not even met to discuss this issue.

"We have demanded the implementation of the law. The Municipal Council has a clear law before it, but it has not even met to discuss it ," said Alimehmeti, invited to the "Log." show on News24.

Alimehmeti stressed that Rama's request to instruct the Municipal Council to continue the procedures for Veliaj's dismissal is a clear violation of the law. According to him, Prime Minister Rama has no right to give legal instructions to the Municipal Council, as it is a body that acts according to its own law.

" The fact that we have this situation, Rama committed a violation by saying he asks the municipal council to continue legal procedures. At no point in the law does the prime minister give legal instructions to the municipal council, " Alimehmeti added.

Alimehmeti also said that Rama's request for direct intervention indicates the concentration of power in a single hand and that the central government cannot interfere in the affairs of local government. He underlined that Rama has taken "all powers in one hand", and this has led to a "clash" between local and central government.

"We will continue to demand the implementation of the law. This is our position, and we will continue to stand firm," Alimehmeti concluded.
