Greece's plans to block Albania's EU integration are revealed. Athens has warned that it will impose a veto if Fredi Beleri is convicted, but today the European Parliament has taken an important step to completely remove the possibility of vetoes when it comes to enlargement.
On Thursday, the EP approved a resolution on the European Union enlargement process, through which it requested that this process become more efficient, including removing the use of the veto for member countries.
The resolution was supported by 305 deputies, while 157 deputies voted against and 71 abstained.
The European Union, currently, for each decision in the field of foreign policy and security, including the enlargement process, must find consensus. This has often led to decisions being blocked by a member state through a veto, even when all others were in favor.
But this resolution seems to be in favor of Albania. Athens has currently blocked the opening of the integration chapters by placing a veto, as it has warned that it will do this in the future. The crisis was also seen today or yesterday in two summits held in Tirana, which were boycotted by the Greek Prime Minister. It remains to be seen how much the resolution will be implemented even if EU leaders take a final step to lift the veto.
