"VOA": Zelensky, invitation to the Balkan countries to co-produce

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today invited the countries of the Balkans for a possible cooperation in the production of ammunition, which Ukraine needs in its confrontation with Russian aggression. He made this proposal at the summit held in Tirana, where the countries of Southeast Europe participated. The joint statement, adopted at the end of the meeting, meanwhile called on the international community to strongly increase support for Ukraine

Arriving in Tirana, shortly before midnight, Ukrainian President Zelensky started the day with a meeting with Prime Minister Rama. A one-on-one conversation between the two and then with the respective delegations, ended with the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the two countries.

Albania is among the first countries that supported Ukraine without hesitation, offering aid, as well as aligning with other countries to impose sanctions on Russia. She was also co-custody with the United States on the Ukraine issue during her two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. For all these reasons, President Zelensky today honored Prime Minister Rama with the "Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise", one of Ukraine's highest titles.

In a post on the X social network, after the meeting with Mr. Rama, the Ukrainian president wrote that together they had discussed "among other things, the defense needs of Ukraine and the possibility of joint production of weapons."

An idea which he then threw out as an invitation to the countries of the region, participating in today's summit, while emphasizing the need to support his country in the fight against Russian aggression. " We look at problems with the supply of ammunition, which affect the situation on the battlefield, and therefore we are interested in the co-production of ammunition with you and our partners. Our management team will present all the details and we propose to organize a special defense industry forum between Ukraine and the Balkans either in Kiev or in one of your capitals .

Prime Minister Edi Rama, in his speech at the opening of the meeting, called on the largest and richest countries of the democratic community "to recognize their role. The survival of Ukraine as a free, independent and democratic state and as a bastion of freedom in Europe as a whole depends on the financial and military support they provide first of all. This support should not be hostage to short-term domestic policies or democratic delays. Make no mistake! Ukraine is not only fighting for itself, but for everything in which we believe, stand and work".

The final statement of the meeting also contained a call to the entire international community to strongly increase support for Ukraine in its struggle. The text was agreed upon after long negotiations with Serbia, which opposed a wording that mentioned the 6 countries of the Western Balkans, because of Kosovo. And the solution seems to be that of the nominal ranking of all participants in the opening text of the declaration. According to the Serbian media, another point was a passage related to sanctions against Moscow, which Belgrade did not support. In the final text, in fact, the term sanction is not mentioned.

On the other hand, all the participating countries fully supported the Peace Plan proposed by President Zelensky and confirmed the participation in the Peace Summit that Ukraine intends to organize in Switzerland.

Earlier in the day, a meeting was held between the foreign ministers of the two countries. " Albania supports the 10-Point Plan of President Zelensky, as the most realistic possibility to end the war and achieve a lasting peace. Together with other actors and countries, we have already committed to cooperation in the realization of Point 5, which is about "Restoring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine", as one of the most immediate objectives of the end of the war" , declared after Albanian Minister Igli Hasani meeting.

Albania is among the first countries that supported Ukraine without reservations and committed to contribute directly with aid. Minister Hasani said that even during today's meeting, " we talked about the economic and financial assistance that Albania can offer to cope with the situation in Ukraine, but also about its reconstruction, which we hope will happen as soon as possible, without any delay ".

Within the next few months, as announced by the Albanian Foreign Minister, the Albanian embassy is expected to open in Kiev. " We are in the stage of technical preparations ", explained Mr. Hasani.

For his part, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy Dmytro Kuleba thanked Albania for the support provided in many directions, focusing especially on its role during the two-year mandate as a temporary member of the UN Security Council. Albania is also valued by Kiev as a member of NATO, where Ukraine seeks to become a member. " Our expectations are that, among other things, one of the results of the Washington summit will be a step forward towards Ukraine's membership, which will finally make this part of Europe safer ", said Minister Kuleba. /VOA
