The Kosovo Assembly has begun a solemn session on the day of the Declaration of Independence, while the 18th anniversary of statehood is being celebrated since this morning.
The solemn session began with the anthem of Kosovo, while this moment commemorates the journey of the state of Kosovo and is an important event for all citizens of the country.
The ceremony was attended by senior political and international figures, including Albanian President Bajram Begaj and British MP Alicia Kearns. Also present was the representative of the Jashari family, Rifat Jashari.
The central rostrum in the Kosovo Assembly also bears the 3 letters that symbolize the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). This anniversary of the declaration of Independence comes at a time when 4 of the former KLA leaders, including former President Hashim Thaçi, who read the declaration of Independence 18 years ago, are facing trial in The Hague, at the Special Court, where the prosecution has requested 45 years in prison for each of them.
President Vjosa Osmani said that 18 years ago Kosovo rose from suffering to dignity and from resistance to statehood, thus proving that freedom gained through sacrifice is eternal.
"18 years ago, Kosovo was declared a free, independent and sovereign state, ending a long and painful journey, but also opening a new chapter in our national history. Kosovo's independence was won with effort, with blood, with sacrifice and centuries of patience, it was built by those who were persecuted, imprisoned, expelled, fought, but never submitted. Today, with the deepest respect, we bow before the memory of all those men and women who fell on this day so that Kosovo could be a Republic," Osmani declared.
