Will Kosovo emerge from political deadlock? The Assembly meets again today to
Assembly of Kosovo

The Kosovo Assembly will convene today in another attempt to conclude the constitution process, which has remained suspended due to the failure to elect a deputy speaker from the Serbian community.

At the session held on August 26, the Serbian List MP, Slavko Simić, failed to receive the necessary votes in three rounds of voting to occupy the position of deputy speaker. Subsequently, the newly elected Speaker of the Assembly, Dimal Basha, decided that the procedure would continue through a draw, as provided for in the Assembly's regulations.

However, another candidate from the Serb community, Nenad Rašić, also failed to secure enough votes in the next round. For Rašić, who has run again, today will be his third – and according to the regulations, his last – attempt to gain the support of the deputies.

During the session of 26 August, Dimal Basha was elected Speaker of the Assembly with 73 votes in favour, 30 against and eight abstentions. On the same day, the deputy speakers from the main Albanian parties were also elected: Albulena Haxhiu (LVV), Vlora Çitaku (PDK) and Kujtim Shala (LDK), while from the non-Serb communities, Emilia Rexhepi was elected as the rotating deputy speaker.

After two unsuccessful attempts to elect the Serbian representative to the presidency of the Assembly, today the process is expected to take place through a draw, in accordance with legal procedures and regulations in force.
