The constitutive session of the Kosovo Assembly has failed again for the ninth time in a row. The chairman of the session, Avni Dehari, proposed that the candidate for speaker of parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, be voted on by secret ballot. But this proposal did not pass, leading to another failure of the session.
The opposition parties LDK, PDK and AAK declared that the voting method cannot be changed at this stage. The session was interrupted to continue after 48 hours in the Kosovo parliament.
The process has stalled after the winning party, the Vetevendosje Movement, is failing to secure the necessary votes for its candidate for Speaker of the Assembly.
In five out of six votes for the election of Albulena Haxhiu, only 57 deputies voted, while she needed at least 61 votes to be elected.
Haxhiu is seen by some parliamentary parties as a "divisive figure", but Vetëvendosje insists that she is a deserving candidate.
It is still unknown whether after the meeting between the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, candidate for prime minister of the coalition with Guxo and Alternativa, Albin Kurti, and the leader of the PDK, Memli Krasniqi, the name of the candidate for parliamentary speaker, Albulena Haxhiu, will change.
