Pristina in crisis: Vetevendosje blocked, the West awaits a new government

Albin Kurti without a majority, the opposition rejects the coalition, while the EU and the US demand stability and the resumption of dialogue with Serbia...

Kosovo is in a deep political impasse after the parliamentary elections of February 9, 2025. Albin Kurti's Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV), although it emerged as the leading force with around 41% of the vote and 48 mandates, failed to secure the majority needed to form a new government. The opposition, including the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has refused any cooperation with Kurti, leaving the country in an institutionally precarious situation.

This deadlock has caused a constitutional crisis, as the incumbent government has not resigned, while Vetëvendosje has failed to secure support to form a new cabinet. President Vjosa Osmani has called a constitutive session of the Assembly for April 15, but without a political agreement, the risk of new elections is high.

The approach of Western diplomacy:

The European Union and the United States have expressed concern about the political situation in Kosovo. The EU has criticized the polarization of the political debate and called for the formation of a functional government to resume dialogue with Serbia and implement the agreements reached, including the establishment of the Association of Serb-Majority Municipalities.

On the other hand, the US has raised concerns about Kurti's approach towards Serbia and has called for a more constructive engagement in the EU-mediated dialogue. Former US envoy Richard Grenell has criticized Kurti for a lack of credibility and warned of consequences if there is no progress in the normalization process.

Kosovo is at a critical juncture where the lack of a functional government endangers not only internal stability, but also relations with Western allies. Vetëvendosje must reflect on its political approach and seek compromises to overcome the current crisis. Otherwise, the country may face international isolation and stagnation in integration processes./ Pamphlet
