The Special Prosecution's claim against former President Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP Rexhep Selimi has shocked Kosovo and beyond.
MP Vlora Çitaku reacted by emphasizing that the fight for freedom and human dignity cannot be criminalized.
"The fight for freedom cannot be condemned. The fight for human and national dignity cannot be criminalized. History is not rewritten with injustice. Justice is delayed, but the truth remains. Justice! Freedom!", Çitaku writes in X.
Her reaction comes at a time when the Specialized Prosecution has completed its closing statements, seeking severe sentences for former President Hashim Thaçi, former Speaker of Parliament Kadri Veseli, as well as Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, who are being tried for war crimes.
Prosecutor Kimberly West has said that punishment is not sought for the KLA General Staff, but for the accused persons, requesting 45 years in prison.
“The Office of the Specialist Prosecutor seeks a conviction on all counts of the indictment and a single sentence of 45 years, based on the individual contributions of the crimes committed by each of the individuals, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi. These are war crimes and crimes against humanity, they are serious and these charges have not lost their value with the passage of time,” she said.
She alleged that 100 people were killed and hundreds more were abused, in and around 50-plus detention camps of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).
"This case is about the intent of the four defendants to gain and exercise control over all of Kosovo. This determination for power and authority was met with something, and that was with individuals who had come forward as opponents or were identified as collaborators with Serbian forces, or Serbian officials, or who did not support the goals of the KLA," West said.
