Kosovo in early elections? Konjufca: The chances for the dissolution of the

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Glauk Konjufca, said that in recent days "the chances for the dissolution of the Assembly have decreased".

The reason for this, according to him, is the lack of consensus of the political parties on how to proceed to new elections.

" But, if a consensus is not reached so that we can be sure that we have significantly above the number of 80 and not that we are at the limit, because the distribution of the Assembly may not be done, you know it requires two thirds of the votes. Only the majority with the PDK would be at the limit of these numbers. That is why we sought wider consensus. In the opposition camp, there was no compatibility, so I think that in the last few days, the chances of the Assembly being dissolved have been reduced ," said Konjufca.

According to Speaker Konjufca, the deadline to reach a consensus between the political parties for the dissolution of the Assembly and the holding of early elections would be the first week of June.

" If the first week of June goes, and we would enter the first week of July for extraordinary elections, then if these time limits are exceeded, we will not have early elections. Then, the mandate will be fully consumed by the Government and the majority" , said Speaker Konjufca during a statement to the media on May 29.

The mandate of the Government of Kosovo, led by Albin Kurti, ends at the beginning of 2025, but the opposition parties have long been demanding the holding of early elections, describing them as "harmful to the country".

The largest opposition entity, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) supports the dissolution of the Assembly. But the other two opposition parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), want new elections through the dismissal or resignation of the Government of Prime Minister Albin Kurti. However, Kurti's Self-Determination Movement has ruled out the possibility of going to the elections through the resignation of the executive.

Prime Minister Kurti has expressed his openness to holding early elections. He said that it would be good if the new elections were held in the spring or autumn of this year.

For the dissolution of the Assembly, it is necessary to collect 40 signatures for the motion in advance, which must then be voted on by 80 legislators.

Since Kosovo became an independent state in 2008, no elected government has completed its 4-year mandate./ REL
