Kurti reacts to the EU's punitive measures against Kosovo: Sometimes we
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, at the government meeting today, spoke about the list of measures against Kosovo that were presented by the European Commission to the European Parliament.

Kurti said in front of the ministers that, "on occasion we have been critical of the European Union", but according to him, they have never been "neither cynical nor embittered".

"Yesterday, the European Commission presented to the European Parliament a list of measures against Kosovo. The European Union finds in Kosovo the most sincere and stable partner and ally of European values, democratic principles and long-term interests.

"Kosovo has such a Government, such a people, first the people and then the Government. On occasion we have been critical of the European Union, but we are never cynical or bitter even today", added Kurti.

He emphasized that they appreciate the support and assistance of the EU throughout all these years and we are looking forward to the membership questionnaire.

"Europe is our continent and the European Union is our destiny", said Kurti.

In the discussion that was held on Tuesday in the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, the general director for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the EU, Gert Jan Koopman, warned that a series of measures will be taken towards Kosovo.

The announced measures include the suspension of the funding program for Kosovo, the suspension of ongoing support for procurement and the signing of contracts, the suspension of participation in high-level events, the suspension of bilateral visits, as well as the non-proceeding of the proposal submitted by Kosovo for the investment framework for the Western Balkans. Koopman has emphasized that the measures will come into force at the end of this week.

But some MEPs have raised questions about why measures are being taken only against Kosovo.

The Dutch MEP Thijs Reuten asked the EU emissary for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, "why only Kosovo is being appealed to".

"Can you explain why, over a decade, we haven't taken a stronger stance against someone who has turned escalation and de-escalation into a form of art. Finally, after not signing the agreement, returning to Belgrade, Mr. Vucic violated the agreement reached in principle. A few days later, a commissioner comes to the door with 600 million euros. This is a signal that we don't need when dealing with autocrats," said Reuten.
