The government of Kosovo announced late on Thursday that it has decided to cancel the decision to put stickers on vehicles with Serbian license plates.
The decision of the Kosovo Government comes after Serbia decided to allow vehicles with license plates RKS - Republic of Kosovo - to move freely in its territory from the beginning of this week.
The government of Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that the removal of the adhesive paper regime "is an act of good neighborliness and comes after full recognition of the number plates of the Republic of Kosovo by Serbia".
Its decision will enter into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette.
On the issue of the Free movement, Kosovo and Serbia first reached an agreement in 2011, during the dialogue mediated by the European Union for the normalization of relations.
After the tensions caused by the issue of license plates, in September 2021 the interim agreement on the license plates was reached. That agreement, which was meant to be in effect for six months until the Kosovo and Serbia working groups find a long-term solution, had drivers with both Kosovo and Serbian license plates put stickers on the state symbols on their license plates, every time they crossed the border of these two states.
For some Serbian citizens in the north of Kosovo, the decision of the Government of Serbia on RKS license plates was "good" and for others "treason".
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said on December 31 that the decision to allow the free movement of vehicles with RKS license plates through central Serbia, his government has avoided "big pitfalls and dangers" for the country.
"Our interest is the Open Balkans and freedom of movement, which also applies to vehicles. I think that the Serbian people and Serbia as a whole will benefit from this decision. With this and some other things, we have avoided great pitfalls and dangers for Serbia ", Vucic said.
Belgrade's decision was welcomed by the European Union, which described it as a positive step towards the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
For the Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi, the Serbian Government's decision on RKS license plates was an indication that "all the destabilizations" that Serbia has done in relation to them over the years have been "illogical and unnecessary"./REL
