The Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi, in a meeting with journalists in Pristina, said that Kosovo should not announce elections in the north of the country, without removing the punitive measures imposed by the European Union.
Bislimi said that he is waiting for the EU announcement on the lifting of sanctions, after the agreement reached between Kosovo and the EU in Bratislava, and the withdrawal of 25% of the police forces from the municipal buildings in the 4 northern municipalities.
Although earlier, the president of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani said that the organization of elections is allowed by the legal regulation of Kosovo and that something like this can be done through a petition signed by 20 percent of the citizens who are on the voting list, who can initiate the process of new elections, Bislimi said that he is not sure that there is a suitable legal basis for their announcement.
"It is an internal problem of Kosovo for which there is no agreement as to whether an administrative instruction is sufficient, or whether a law is needed," he said.
The eventual resignation of the mayors would lead the municipalities to early elections, but according to Bislim, the Government, led by the Vetëvendosje Movement, will not ask for such a thing from the mayors of the municipalities of North Mitrovica and Leposaviq, who are from this party.
The mayors of two other municipalities, Zveçan and Zubin Potok, are members of the Democratic Party of Kosovo.
