The rapporteur for Kosovo in the European Parliament, Viola von Cramon, no longer sees any reason for the European Union to continue to maintain restrictive measures against Kosovo.
Kosovo, as she says, has already done its part of the tasks to escalate the situation in the north.
"The reason for the restrictive measures no longer exists. Kosovo has done its part to escalate the situation in the north since May 2023. And, moreover, the measures in force have not been proportionate since the attack in Banjska last September. The European Parliament has clearly and overwhelmingly requested the removal of the measures, and I personally support the removal of the measures immediately ," Von Cramon said.
She emphasized that the ball is now "in the EU's court.
" As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing else to be done on the part of Kosovo in this direction - the ball is now in the court of the EU" , she said.
Von Cramon considered that the April 21 "referendum" was a good opportunity for Serbian citizens to regain control of local government, but they did not take advantage of it.
" The processes in the north of Kosovo since last April have been very painful and harmful to the mutual trust between the government and the local Serbian community. This referendum was the opportunity for the Serbs to regain control of the local government, but this opportunity was unfortunately lost and I am very sorry ", von Cramon told KALLXO.com.
Despite the fact that the authorities in Kosovo also say this, the EU has declared that the result of the voting process on 21.04.2024, in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, does not contribute to the reduction of tensions.
The EU has emphasized that that process has not helped to pave the way for the return of Serbs to the institutions of Kosovo, "which is essential for the normalization of relations".
In an answer to the portal, the EU has emphasized that it regrets that the Serbs did not use the right to vote to elect the presidents.
" The EU expresses its regret that the Kosovo Serbs in the north of Kosovo did not take advantage of the opportunity to exercise their right to vote and elect mayors who would be truly representative. The result does not contribute to easing tensions and opening the way for the return of Serbs to the institutions of Kosovo, which is essential for the normalization of relations ", said the EU spokesperson, Peter Stano.
Without giving details about the time, Stano said that the Council will discuss the punitive measures imposed on Kosovo.
On 21.04.2024 in the four municipalities in the north, Northern Mitrovica, Zveçan, Leposavic and Zubin-Potok, voting for the dismissal of the mayors was organized.
The Central Election Commission has announced that during the voting for or against the removal of the mayors of Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica, only 253 citizens voted, while none in Zveçan - calling this process a failure.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, have immediately requested the removal of the measures that the EU imposed on Kosovo last year under the pretext that it did not do enough to reduce tensions in the north.
While, according to the Government, regardless of the result, the obligation that Kosovo had has been fulfilled. The opposition parties in the country have also demanded the lifting of the measures.
The EU imposed punitive measures against Kosovo last summer, on the grounds that it had not done enough to de-escalate the situation in northern Kosovo in May 2023. At that time, local Serbs protested in front of municipal buildings in Leposaviq, Zveçan and Zubin Potok against new leaders, and as a result the situation escalated into violence./ Telegrafi
