The special envoy of the European Union for the dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, will visit Kosovo today, in an effort to expand the situation in the north of Kosovo.
Lajcak is expected to visit Serbia as well, to convince the parties to return to dialogue. It is announced that Lajçak will meet with President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
"At 3:00 p.m., the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, welcomes the Special Representative of the EU, Miroslav Lajçak, in a meeting", it is stated in the announcement of the information office of the Presidency.
This is Lajcak's second visit in a month, after he made a visit together with the American emissary for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, at the beginning of June.
The EU continues to repeat calls for both parties to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation and return to the dialogue for the normalization of relations, which is mediated by Brussels. These calls were also made during the last summit of EU leaders that was held last week in Brussels.
Tensions in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, started on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, entered the municipal buildings under the escort of the Kosovo Police. The Serbs objected to this and have since been holding protests demanding the withdrawal of new mayors and special police units. The situation in the north continues to be tense as the criminal groups are constantly provoking the situation, where now and again there are reports of explosions in the north. We also remember that Serbian protesters have attacked the Kosovo Police, KFOR and the media.
