The political situation in Kosovo has entered a critical phase after the recent parliamentary elections. Albin Kurti and the Vetevendosje Movement managed to win the majority of votes, thus securing the moral and political legitimacy to continue leading the country. However, faced with an unfavorable geopolitical reality and an international climate that openly shows a tendency to revise borders and favor special interests, the challenges for Kurti are greater than ever.
Donald Trump's administration, which at the end of his first term gave clear signals of a less clear policy for Kosovo and more open to Serbia's interests, bringing to the table the controversial idea of a territory swap. This approach of Trump has created a delicate and uncertain environment for Kosovo, making the position of Albin Kurti and Vetëvendosje more sensitive on the international level.
In this context, the main political question is whether Kurti should form a government now or allow his opponents to try to do so, while preserving his political integrity and consistency. On the one hand, taking power gives Kurti the opportunity to implement his political and social vision in Kosovo. On the other hand, the complicated international situation could force him into a painful compromise, severely damaging his political image and undermining the popular support he currently enjoys.
A strategic option for Kurti could be precisely tactical withdrawal – allowing his opponents, who are more willing to make dubious international compromises, to take responsibility for the government at this difficult moment. Such an approach would allow Albin to maintain his integrity, while remaining a strong moral alternative in case the other government fails in negotiations or in the integration processes.
This strategic scenario may seem like a step backwards, but it could be the safest path to protect Kosovo’s long-term interests. Given international developments that currently seem to favor the revisions and interests of major powers, Kosovo needs a leader who does not waste his political credibility on agreements that violate the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Kosovo is at a historic moment. The decisions Kurti will make in the coming days will not only be political choices, but also strategic determinations for the future of the country. At this turning point, preserving coherence, integrity and sovereignty must be a priority above any personal or party ambition./ Pamphlet
