Richard Grenell reveals the hard details, how the final bargain between Thaçi and Vucic failed...
The former US special envoy for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Richard Grenell, has recently shown in an interview how Serbia and Kosovo were on the way to reaching the so-called "final agreement" between them, but the prosecutor intervened. KLA crime specialist Jack Smith.
In an interview with Donald Trump Jr., broadcast on an online platform, Grenell revealed details of the work of special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is currently known to the American public after filing two federal indictments against Donald Trump for trying to cancel the results of the 2020 elections.
Prosecutor Smith is also known to Serbian and Kosovo opinion, since as the chief prosecutor of the Special Court for Crimes of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) he filed an indictment against the former president of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi and other commanders of the KLA.
Grenell said that the indictment against Thaçi, whom he described as a "great man" and Joe Biden once called "the George Washington of Kosovo", was preceded by negotiations to reach a "final agreement" between Kosovo and Serbia aimed at the abolition of the Special Court for KLA crimes.
" A series of prosecutors could not find evidence against Thaci, and the previous prosecutor said there was nothing, closed the case and left. The Hague continued to spend US dollars and Jack Smith spent a few more years investigating war crimes ," Grenell said.
He emphasized that the indictment against Thaçi was filed in June 2020, only after he announced that Hashim Thaçi and Aleksandar Vucic were coming to meet President Donald Trump at the White House.
" We should have negotiated and reached a historic agreement between the two parties. I told the Ministry of Justice that they have agreed to abolish the court in The Hague in the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia ", repeated Grenell.
He notes that he then spoke with Brice Schëartz of the Justice Department, who told him that prosecutor Smith needed to know about it because it was his job and asked that Grenell wait to speak to the prosecutor first.
" Two days later I heard that Smith said, 'You can't do that.' Three or four weeks later, Smith announced the indictment against Thaci. Before he came to the White House, Thaçi was sent to The Hague and he is still in prison ," said Grenell.
The Special Court for KLA Crimes was created after Dick Marti's report to the Council of Europe in 2011, which alleged war crimes after the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo in 1999.
Smith became the chief prosecutor of the Special Court in May 2017, three years later in 2020, Thaçi and other KLA commanders were indicted.
In 2018, a story appeared in the public opinion about a possible "demarcation" between Kosovo and Serbia, i.e. for an exchange of territories. Both Vucic and Thaci talked about this, even the then president of Kosovo said that this was the only way to end the conflict between Belgrade and Pristina.
American professor Daniel Server said in the spring of 2020, before the indictment against Thaçi, that both sides can reach an agreement by September and that for the Trump administration the details are not important, but for them only the signature is important. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Nova.rs"
