The visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Kosovo could help towards further steps by the European Union to gradually lift measures against Kosovo. But at the moment there is no concrete action in this direction.
Diplomatic sources in the EU say that the smooth conduct of the local elections was a good signal, especially the large participation of Kosovo Serbs in these elections. But the same sources have added that some regions want to wait and see how the transfer of local power will be carried out to those who won the local elections.
An EU spokesperson said that Von der Leyen was encouraged after the talks she had in Kosovo.
"President Von der Leyen had constructive discussions with President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti during her tour of the Western Balkans. She was encouraged by the peaceful, competitive and inclusive first round of local elections, with the participation of all communities. This is an important signal of de-escalation in the north which will be considered in the context of further lifting of measures. We expect the second round of elections to take place in the same manner and look forward to an orderly transition of local governance ," an EU spokesperson told Koha.
The EU had long ago adopted a decision to gradually lift the measures against Kosovo, but in the same decision it was stated that this should be done in parallel with Kosovo's measures towards reducing tensions in the north. With the exception of some symbolic steps, the measures have not changed. A few days ago, several civil society organizations from Kosovo also requested the lifting of the measures.
