The case against actor Alec Baldwin was dismissed on Friday by a judge in New Mexico. The decision was made while the court process was ongoing. The judge also ruled that this type of lawsuit cannot be brought against Baldwin again.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the court case based on violations by police and prosecutors who withheld evidence from the defense in the shooting death of producer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie "Rust."
Baldwin wept in the courtroom and hugged his lawyers after the verdict was announced.
At the request of prosecutors, a grand jury in January re-indicted actor Alec Baldwin for manslaughter in the fatal 2021 incident, bringing the case back against the popular actor.
Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of the Western film Rust, was pointing a gun at filmmaker Halyna Hutchins during rehearsals for a Santa Fe outdoor shoot in October 2021 when the gun went off, killing the filmmaker and injured director Joel Souza. Baldwin has said he did not pull the trigger.
The re-filing of the lawsuit again landed Baldwin in legal trouble and raised the prospect of sending a well-known television and film actor to prison for nearly 40 years.
Special prosecutors had initially withdrawn a similar charge against Baldwin, saying they had been informed that the gun might have been modified before the filming and that it might have malfunctioned. They later changed their stance and started filing new charges against him after receiving the results of new tests on the weapon in question.
